Today we're talking with Sari about her lacy summer socks, Thistle. If you're new to sock or lace knitting and feel unsure about knitting your own pair of Thistle socks, read on for some encouragement from Sari!
Sari: I was inspired by the sea and the way the waves hit the beach on a windless day making soft ripples and carrying seafoam. I wanted to mimic the slow rhythmic waves into my design. I also love how the lace looks like plants growing upwards.
Sari: Sock knitting is so much easier than it looks! There are plenty of good tutorials online both on blogs and on YouTube that help you through all the steps. The lace pattern in these socks is really easy to memorize and the pattern repeats are short, so I think it is suitable even for knitters who aren’t that familiar with lace knitting.
amirisu: How did you start your knitting journey?
Sari: In Finland we learn the basic knitting stitches in school, but I really only started to knit in my twenties when I was in university. A friend suggested I should bring my knitting project to our art history classes like the other girls did because they claimed it helped them concentrate better. I was too embarrassed to say I didn’t quite know how to knit, so I learned it secretly at home by watching YouTube videos. Since then, I have never put my needles down.

さて、今日ご紹介するのは、Sariさんの覚えやすいレース模様が楽しい春夏にぴったりなソックス、Thistleです。
amirisu: このデザインのインスピレーションはどこから得ましたか？
Sari: 風のない静かな海で、波が浜辺で柔らかな波紋を描き、泡を運ぶイメージからインスピレーションを得ました。ゆっくりでリズミカルな波をデザインに取り入れたかったのです。このレース模様は、上向きに成長する植物のように見えるのも気に入っています。
amirisu: 靴下を編む経験がないまたは少ない人のためにThistleを編む時のコツやアドバイスはありますか？
Sari: 靴下を編むのは見た目よりずっと簡単です！ネットで検索してみると、すべての手順を確認できるチュートリアルがブログやYoutubeにたくさん出ています。このレース模様はとても覚えやすく、パターンの繰り返しが短いので、レース編みにあまり慣れていない人でも楽しく編めると思います。
amirisu: 編み物を始めたきっかけは何でしたか？
Sari: フィンランドでは学校で基本的な編み方を教わりますが、実際に編み始めたのは大学在学中の20代の頃でした。友人から、他の女の子達もやっているように、美術史の授業に編み物を持ち込むとよいと勧められました。彼女たちは編みながら講義を聞くとより集中できると主張していたのです。私は編み方がよくわからないと正直に言うのは恥ずかしかったので、家でYouTubeの動画を見てこっそりと学びました。それからは私が針を下ろすことはありませんでした。
