Finally the temperature started to drop, and winter has officially began! There are so many things I want to cast on, but a cozy cardigan would be at the top of my list. So, today on the  blog, we introduce Sachiko Burgin, the designer behind Monstera from amirisu issue 18.

amirisu: Where did you get the inspiration for Monstera?

Sachiko: The apartments I have lived in over the last few years have had very little or no backyard space ( Im sure people living in Tokyo can relate!). Because of this, I have become very fond of growing indoor plants. I have ferns, spider plants, a lemon tree, a Norfolk pine... but I have always wanted a monstera! I love their big and asymmetrical leaves! It will be the next houseplant I buy if I ever have more space. I was thinking about how houseplants bring a sense of well-being and serenity to your life - just like knitting! I thought that I should dedicate a knitting pattern to houseplants, and so, the Monstera cardigan was born!

amirisu: If you were to knit with another color, what would it be?

Sachiko: If I were to knit the Monstera cardigan in a different colour, I would use Quince and Co Lark in colour Maple. It's a beautiful soft pinkish red shade, that I believe would be a great addition to any Autumn wardrobe. And of course, being a Canadian, anything with the name Maple catches my interest! It's a hard choice, since Lark comes in so many great Autumn shades. Some runner ups would be NightshadeKittywake or Sedum.

amirisu: What is your favorite way of spending time outdoors?

Sachiko: Going for hikes and exploring Ontario trails has been one of favourite ways to spend time outdoors. Some of my favorite spots I have visited are Algonquin Park, Sleeping Giant Provincial Park and Lion's Head. The best time of year to hike is when the weather is still cool, and the mosquitoes and deer flies aren't out and you can bundle in cozy knits! During early spring, there are so many wildflowers starting to bloom and in the Autumn the leaves start to change colours - Canada is so beautiful at these times of the year. When I am at home in the city, I am very lucky because I live near two of Toronto's largest parks, High Park and the Humber Valley, which are home to a surprising amount of wildlife!

Thank you Sachiko for your time. I would love to visit Ontario, and explore the beauty of Canada.
