Mizuho Komiya designed Mimosa, a shawl featuring a subtle two-color brioche motif, for Issue 20. Mizuho also teaches lessons at Walnut Kyoto as a member of the amirisu team.
amirisu: What was your inspiration for this design?
Mizuho:I’ve always really liked projects with repeating patterns. When I saw Nancy Marchant’s beautiful collection of brioche patterns, it inspired me to try to design a repeating motif of small flowers. I kept swatching and swatching until I found something I liked.
amirisu: If you were to knit this design in another color, what would it be?
Mizoho: I’d like to make a monochrome version with dark gray and off-white. I already bought some yarn with this in mind, but I haven’t had the time to knit it up yet.
The colors in the original sample are subtle, but I think it would be quite striking to increase the contrast and accentuate the floral pattern more, too.
amirisu: How did you start your knitting journey?
Mizuho: I’ve always enjoyed making things. I don’t remember when or how I started knitting, but I have memories knitting as a child. I developed a passion for knitting when I was around 30, I was expecting a child and wanted to knit things for my baby.
amirisu: Could you tell us about any shops or places you recommend in your area? We are dreaming of places to go and things to do in the future.
Mizuho: There are many wonderful temples and shrines in Kyoto, but my favorite is Kamigamo Shrine. It’s located in the northern part of the city where it’s a little quieter. The harmony between the traditional architecture and surrounding nature is so calming. The shrine also hosts a regular craft market as well other events from time to time, which can be fun to walk though and take a look at, too.
本日ご紹介するのは爽やかな黄色と小花柄が印象的なMimosaのデザイナー、Mizuho Komiyaさんです。Walnut京都店でレッスンを受け持つamirisuの仲間でもあります。
amirisu: このデザインのインスピレーションはどこから得ましたか？
Mizuho: 元々モチーフの連続模様が大好きで、ナンシーマーチャントさんの美しいブリオッシュ編みのパターン集を見ているときに、何か小花が連続したようなものが作れないかと思い、何枚もスワッチを編んで考えました。
amirisu: もう1枚編むとしたら何色で編みますか？
Mizuho: 濃いグレーとオフホワイト等モノトーンでも編んでみたいと思い、実はもう糸も用意しているのですが編む時間がなくて。
地色とモチーフに明度の差をつければお花の模様がもっと浮き上がってはっきり見えるのもステキだと思っています。
amirisu: 編み物を始めたきっかけは何でしたか？
Mizuho: 私は子供の頃から物を作るのが好きで気がつけば編み物もしていた、という感じですが、本格的にハマりだしたのは30歳頃子供を授かってその子の為に何か編もうと思ったことがきっかけです。
amirisu: ご自宅の近くのオススメのお店や場所があったら教えて下さい (自由に旅をできる日々が戻ってくることを夢見ています)。
Mizuho: 私の住んでいる京都には素晴らしい神社仏閣がたくさんありますが、気に入っているのは上賀茂神社です。京都市の北区に位置し、境内には小川が流れていて美しい建物と自然の調和が心を落ち着けてくれます。また境内では手作り市等が開かれていることがあり、それを見て歩くのも楽しいのです。
