Today's interview is with Mizuho Komiya, a member of the amirisu team at our Kyoto shop.
For Issue 27, she designed Prelude, a long vest with beautiful vertical lines and charming tweedy took made with Woolfolk Fleck. This vest adds a chic accent and touch of drama to even a simple outfit like turtleneck and pair of straight-legged pants. We are fascinated by the inspiration behind this design and we hope you'll find it interesting, too. Let's jump into it!
amirisu: What was your inspiration for this design?
Mizuho: When I first heard that the theme was music, I thought not of the music itself, but rather of the stillness of a moment that heralds the beginning of the music, the moment of anticipation and tension as the conductor raises their baton and the music begins.
The image of silence at the moment, but the door to a new story opening soon, is reflected in the vertical lines of the center and back. I thought it would be cute if the center of the long vest had a thin vertical line connected from the neckline from top to bottom.
amirisu: What were some of the challenges did you encounter during the design process?
Mizuho: I had a hard time deciding how thick to make the vertical lines on the front and back, how many stitches use, and whether it would be better to use knit stitches or purl stitches, so I knit a few swatches and thought about it.
amirisu: If you were to knit another one, what color would you use?
Mizuho: I think a dark orange line on a whitish beige base would be cute. Unfortunately, Fleck doesn't have orange, but I think I could use a different yarn just for the lines.
amirisu: Is there any particular music you like to listen to while knitting?
Mizuho: Lately I feel like I usually knit in silence, without any sound, but if I were to put on some must I would play piano jazz at a low volume. I like the sound of the piano.

amirisu: このデザインのインスピレーションは何ですか？
Mizuho: 最初に音楽がテーマと聞いて、曲そのものよりも、音楽がこれから始まる前兆のような静けさ、指揮者がタクトを振り上げてさぁ始まるという期待と緊張の一瞬の風景が思い浮かびました。
今は無音だけれど、すぐに新しい物語の扉が開く、そんなイメージをセンターとバックの縦のラインに込めています。ロングベストの中心にネックラインから繋がった縦の細いラインが上から下まで入っていたらかわいいのではないかと思いました。
amirisu: デザインの過程で、どんな苦労や工夫がありましたか？
Mizuho: 前後身頃の縦のラインの太さをどうするか、何目にするのか、表編みが良いか、裏編みが良いかで悩んで、いくつかスワッチを編んでみて考えました。
amirisu: もう一枚編むとしたら何色で編みますか？
Mizuho: 白っぽいベージュのベースに濃いオレンジのラインもかわいいなと思います。残念ながら、指定糸のFleckにはオレンジが無いので、ラインだけ違う糸で編んでも良さそうです。
amirisu: 編み物をしながら聴く音楽、編み物が捗る音楽はありますか？
Mizuho: 最近は何も音を鳴らさずに無音で編む感じですが、もし鳴らすとしたら、ピアノジャズを小さい音で。ピアノの音色が好きです。
