It is still hot and humid in Japan, but we are starting to feel a little bit of the autumn air at the end of the day. This beautiful shawl, Loie by Maddie Harvey, would be the perfect wrap-around in the evenings when we enjoy the cool breeze.
So, let's start asking Maddie about this design.
amirisu: Where did you get the inspiration for this design?
Maddie: The inspiration for Loie came primarily from the amazing mood board provided by amirisu, which featured lots of photos of light and airy summer clothing. Much of the clothing was in a neutral colour palette and included pleating, and I knew these were features that I wanted to include in my design. I tried to get across the idea of pleated fabric through the use of wide ribbing in the main body of the shawl, and suggest movement and airiness in the eyelets and lace scalloped edge.
The shawl is named after Loie Fuller, who was an early 20th century pioneer of modernist performance. She danced whilst wearing enormous voluminous pleated skirts and would twirl around, making the fabric billow. This seemed like the perfect name for my design.
amirisu: If you were to knit with another color, what will it be?
Maddie: I would love to make Loie with a lightly speckled yarn, something with a pale background, which would still show up the two different textures.
amirisu: What is your favorite way of spending the summer, and what do you knit/ or make in the summer time?
Maddie: My favourite way of spending the summer is by visiting the beach. It's often windy at the coast here in Scotland, so I might have to wear one of my knitted jumpers but I'll still have a little dip of my toes in the sea!
I like knitting socks in the summer as it's lovely to have a stash of newly knitted socks to wear when autumn comes around, and if the weather does happen to get too hot, socks are nice and little to have sitting on your lap, rather than a big garment or shawl.

まだまだ厳しい暑さが続いていますが、朝晩は秋の風を感じられることも多くなってきました。今日ご紹介するMaddie HarveyデザインのLoieはレース糸で編む大判のショールなので、少し肌寒い時くるっと肩に巻くのにぴったりだと思います。
それでは、このショールについてMaddieに色々とお聞きしたいと思います。
amirisu: このデザインのインスピレーションはどこから得ましたか？
Maddie: 最初のインスピレーションは、amirisuから届いた素敵なムードボードにあった軽くて空気を含んだような夏の洋服から得ました。ニュートラルな色とプリーツが多く使われていたので、私のデザインにもその要素を入れたいと思いました。ショール全体に太いリブを入れていくことでプリーツのような効果を出し、アイレットや縁のレース編みで軽やかさを出そうと考えました。
このショールの名前は20世紀初めに活躍したモダンダンスのパイオニアであるLoie Fullerという女性からつけました。とても大きくボリュームのあるプリーツスカートを身につけ、その衣装をうねらせながら踊った彼女の名前が私のショールにぴったりだと思いました。
amirisu: 他の色で編むとしたら何色にしますか？
Maddie: 模様が際立つくらいの、薄い地色に少しつぶつぶが入った糸で編んでみたいです。
amirisu: 夏はどんな過ごし方をするのが好きですか？また、夏には何を編んだり作ったりしますか？
Maddie: 海に行くのが好きです。ただ、スコットランドの海辺は風が強いので、手編みのセーターを着ていくことも多いです。それでも、足先を海につけることはできますから！
夏には靴下を編むのが好きです。そうすれば秋がやってきた時には毎日新しい靴下が履けるし、編んでいる日がたまたま暑い日でも小さくて気にならないので。
